Compass card

Card for a liquid compass.
A card for the original submarine compass of 1903

Card: A one inch mica band attached to the needle by a wire frame. The upper surface of the card is black with grey markings graduated to quarter points and quadrantally in degrees. The lower surface is grey with black markings graduated to points and to 180 East and West. There is a brown band on the Westerly readings and a green band on the Easterly. These graduations are laid out as for an overhead compass.

Needle: The two edge bar needles are enveloped in aluminium and attached to the float.
Dims 4" (10.2 cm) x 1.75" (1.8 cm)

Pivot: The pivot is incorporated in the domed float and the jewel can be removed by a screw at the top of the dome.
