Liquid compass and binnacle

Liquid compass. The following inscription appears twice on this object, once on the binnacle and once on the verge ring: 'Patt 0919 Compass no.1241.H'.

Bowl: Grey painted brass with filler plug at side, and expansion chamber at base with glazed bottom. Inside of bowl painted white. Black lubber line carried on white painted metal strip. Mounted in brass gimbal ring.

Card: Dia 3.75" (9.5 cm). White plastic with black markings, attached to high domed black float at centre. Graduated quadrantally.

Needle: Unsighted.

Pivot: Unsighted but stem can be seen secured on bridge mounted across base of bowl.

Binnacle: Dia 9" (22.9 cm). Grey painted brass, with hood incorporating oil lamp illumination housing and glazed oval hinged window. Gimbal locking lever fitted at side. Handle on top. Mounted onn wood base 1' 8" x 12.25" x 4" (50.8 x 30.8 x 10.1 cm) slotted to accommodate correction spheres.
