Boat's Liquid Compass and Binnacle

Patt 0183, boat's liquid compass, and binnacle.

Bowl: Grey painted brass, filler plug at side, expansion chamber at base. Base fitted with a heavy balancing weight. Inside of bowl painted white with a black wire lubber pointer projecting from the side. Mounted in a grey painted brass gimbal ring 7.0" (17.8 cm) dia. attached to binnacle. Set in outer casing of grey painted brass 8.0" (20.3 cm) dia.

Card: Dia 4.25" (10.8 cm) White painted mica? with black markings, graduated to 8 points and quadrantally in degrees. Attached to a black painted float at centre.

Needle: Unsighted.

Pivot : Unsighted.

Binnacle: Dia 11" (27.9 cm) Wood stained dark brown. Hood grey painted brass (fitting on outer casing of compass) fitted with handle at top, an oval glazed aperture, and an oil lamp at side. Two doors are fitted in the side of the binnacle giving access to the fore-and-aft and athwartship corrector magnet racks, and heeling error bucket. The V in the pattern number of the binnacle signifies the addition of the vertical bucket.
