NMM, Progress Book, volume 5, folio 497, states that 'Tortoise' was sheathed in copper at Mr Wells in June 1777, and on 23 June she sailed for Deptford Dockyard. She sailed from Deptford on 19 July 1777 fitted for sea. It does not record her original role prior to being a Storeship.
