A whole plate negative. A poor port broadside view of the passenger/cargo liner Assyrian Monarch (1880) at moorings in Gravesend Reach, River Thames. She has three yards on each of her fore and main masts and she has a pilot jack, a red ensign, and signal hoists at all four masts. She is flying her international signal code TNWM from her mizzen mast. The photographer has noted "with Jumbo on board". London Zoo's favourite elephant was neing transported to New York, having been bought by Barnum. Tilbury is in the background. The negative is in poor condition. Negatives numbers G1688, G1694, G2041 and G2221 were taken on the same occasion.
