Australia (1870)
A whole plate negative. A fair quality port broadside view of the passenger/cargo liner Australia (1870) at moorings in Gravesend Reach, River Thames. She has an auxiliary barque rig but her topgallant yards have been sent down. Tilbury is in the background. The photographer originally identified this negative as a ship named Whampoa but the only ship named Whampoa that was extant at the time was a much smaller two masted vessel built in 1882.
