Bothwell Castle (1881)
A whole plate negative. A poor quality slightly distant port side view, taken from ahead of the beam, of the general cargo steamship Bothwell Castle (1881) at moorings in Gravesend Reach, River Thames. She has two yards on her foremast. Tilbury is in the background. The emulsion of the original glass plate has disintegrated and the negative has been discarded. A safety film duplicate negative has been made from the original negative showing badly damaged emulsion before it became unprintable. An 11x9 photographic print produced from the original negative in the 1950s before the emulsion started to crack is available for scanning but the quality of the image is only fair.
