Coptic (1881)

A 10x8 negative. A slightly distant port broadside view of the passenger/cargo liner Coptic (1881) at anchor in Gravesend Reach, River Thames. She has three yards on each of her fore and main masts and she is still fitted with her original short funnel. An awning is rigged amidships. The Coast Guard Watch Vessel WV.28 (1847) is dress overall on the Tilbury shore beyond the Coptic's stern. The ferry Cato (1849) is alongside the Tilbury ferry stage on the left. The original 12x10 glass plate negative was broken and discarded in the 1960s but a 12x10 contact photographic print is available from which this 10x8 safety film negative has been produced.
