Norfolk (1879)
A whole plate negative. A port near broadside view, taken from just ahead of the beam, of the passenger/cargo liner Norfolk (1879) at moorings in Gravesend Reach, River Thames. Her fore topgallant yard and all yards on her mainmast sent down. A tug named CANADA is at anchor in the foreground. She has a bell topped funnel and her wheel and compass are at very low at bulwark level. The only tug of this name which appears in the Mercantile Navy List for the relevant period is the Watkins tug Canada, built in 1880, but photographs show her with a plain funnel and a steering position on a raised platform well above the level of the bulwarks. Tilbury is in the background.
