Orotava (1889)
A 12x10 negative. A close bow view, taken from very fine off the starboard bow, of the passenger/cargo liner Orotava (1889) listing to starboard in Tilbury Docks, Essex. She is sitting on the bottom of the dock with a list of 18 degrees after water poured into an open forward discharge valve on the starboard side while taking on coal from barges alongside at her loading berth on 14 December 1896. Four men working in the starboard engine room ballast tank were drowned. She is shown being pumped out with lines attached to her masts stretching to port across the dock. She was refloated one week later. Corner of negative broken.
