Spindrift (1869)
A whole plate negative. A copy of an overpainted photographic print showing a starboard very near broadside view, taken from only just ahead of the beam, of the paddle tug Spindrift (1869) in Gravesend Reach, River Thames. The overpainting shows her under way bound down passing Tilbury Fort with smoking funnels, men on her bridge and one man aft and a laden barge tacking across the river on the left. A pennant has been added to her foremast and the river is quite rough. The original image (see negative number G1665) shows her at anchor in Gravesend Reach with possibly three men on her forward deck but they are almost completely blurred out by movement during the exposure time. Tilbury Fort Watergate is in the background.
