James Cook and the conquest of scurvy
An overview of the expeditions of James Cook, with a primary focus on the advancements he and his crew made in treating scurvy over the course of his expeditions. The author takes two approaches during this text: he provides a narrative overview of Cook's three voyages, but also takes a scientific approach when discussing scurvy. He discusses in detail its causes, how it spreads and how Cook and his team managed to combat the disease during his voyages. The account highlights early voyages of exploration where scurvy was not successfully treated, and how this led Cook and his crew to develop and test cures. Includes an extensive appendix section, with documents and maps relating to both Cook's voyages and the treatment of scurvy. Also included is a bibliography for further reading and a series of black and white photographs relating to Cook's expedition and the treatment of scurvy.
