August's item of the month is a reminder why modern museum's have collecting policies....Mike takes a look at the career of Sir Thomas Phillips (1792- 1872), who among many other things, amassed probably the largest collection anywhere of Nelson correspondence. Early antiquarians collected objects and manuscripts in what can often seem a haphazard, incoherent and more than slightly mad fashion. The other side of the coin however is that without early Antiquarians such as Sir Thomas Phillips, today's Museums would have far less comprehensive and interesting collections.
