Important information for visitors

Until summer 2025, there is a new visitor route at the National Maritime Museum while we carry out essential improvements to the Museum's roof. Most galleries will still be open as normal, and special exhibitions are currently free for all visitors. However, the Great Map and AHOY! will be closed for the duration of the works. The National Archives have just launched a new collection of digitised records: the service registers of around 110,000 Royal Marines who joined between 1842 and 1936.

The collection allows you to search for ordinary seamen (not officers) by name, register number, and date of enlistment. As with other records in documents online you have to pay to see an image of the service register itself. However it's free to search the database and view the key information, thus saving you many an hour at the National Archives and making your family history research just that little bit easier.
