I asked you, ‘What do you see when you see the sea?’ This is what you shared with me.

Tania Kovats

COTIDAL is an ambitious new film project by UK-born artist Tania Kovats, made in collaboration with filmmaker Benjamin Wigley.

Kovats' aim is to create a film 24 hours and 50 minutes long - the length of a lunar day - tracking the wave of high tide around the UK. Commissioned by Time and Tide Bell, this national film project is making a record of how we live with the sea on this small island.

The First Chapter of COTIDAL - anchored in the waters of the South West – is 50 minutes long and will have its London premiere at the National Maritime Museum on 8 June 2023, marking World Oceans Day.

A meditation on the question, "What do you see when you see the sea?", COTIDAL consists of segments created by Kovats herself along with clips sent from the public, woven together to make a cinematic almanac of the tides for our small island.

There will be a short Q&A after the screening hosted by Ben Tufnel with the artist Tania Kovats, her collaborator Benjamin Wigley and Peter Gingold, Producer and Coordinator of Time and Tide Bell.

Screening details

The film starts at 6.30pm in the Lecture Theatre of the National Maritime Museum. Please allow enough time to make your way to the theatre and find a seat.

The National Maritime Museum is closed to general visitors after 5pm, but staff will be ready to welcome you at the main entrance of the Museum.

As well as the premiere of COTIDAL, the National Maritime Museum is also hosting a free World Oceans Day celebration on Saturday 10 June. Find more details here.
