Teacher CPD: Creative Windrush

Barbara completed her PhD in Philosophy at the University of Kent and lectured in sociology, criminology, research methods and social work in the School of Social Policy, Social Research (SSPSSR). Barbara now focuses on institutional research on the Black/White awarding gap, leads on research projects relating to Black students' academic progression, sense of belonging and improving engagement of widening participation students transitioning into higher education.  Barbara’s research interests include decolonising and diversifying the curricula and critical race theory.

Griffi & Rosie have just undertaken a six-month residency at Royal Museums Greenwich, in partnership with the National Windrush Museum. Their residency is based on the concept ‘Rush!... Don’t Rush!’ and has seen them develop work celebrating the energy and experiences of the Windrush generation.  

Jemilea is an innovative artist, educator, and Director of Writerz & Scribez Arts Company, an award-winning organisation making arts accessible through participatory approaches. Her work spans poetry, performance, and visual arts, focusing on themes of migration, belonging and cultural identity. She is currently working with Dwayne on the creation of a Windrush-themed schools session for primary pupils, showcasing her talent for translating complex narratives into engaging, age-appropriate content.

Dwayne, the child of British-Jamaicans arriving to Britain in the 1960s, is currently the Creative Engagement Schools Learning Producer at the National Maritime Museum and the Queen’s House, working with Jemilea to produce a new Windrush schools session for KS2 students. As an anthropologist, writer and overall storyteller, his work strives to use language and culture to help unlock the stories and messages found throughout history and art.
