Letters from John Short to Ella Ambrose October to December 1932.
Short writes from Bombay, aboard HMT NEURALIA. Part-way through the voyage he swaps from a night watch to a day watch shift, and is relieved to have a good night's sleep. He expresses annoyance that he cannot join in with tennis and other sports because of his leg injury, and empathises with Ella, who has long suffered from back problems. In early November Short moves onto the SS BARODA at Bombay and says he likes his new colleagues better. He describes the port of Muscat 'is a very wild place', the first time he has felt like a true foreigner. He describes Indian, Persian and Arab passengers praying on deck, and watching the Dutch Air Mail monoplane circling over head. Short has 7 men at his command: 'one greaser, a head fireman, three stokers and two coal trimmers, it gives one a great satisfaction to know that your own word is law'. The letter from this period on the BARODA is around 30 pages long and very detailed, as they visited a great many ports. Whilst aboard HMT NEURALIA, Short describes the upheaval created by a volcanic eruption in Sumatra in November.
