In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board

It is our opinion that all our low masts are too little in size and the low masts of the 1st and 2nd Rates are too taut as are those of the 70 gun ships. The bowsprits of all are also too long which occasions their fetching away in a sea. It is further our opinion that the standing shrouds should be wormed all over by the riggers or that rope be allowed for that purpose. The 1st Rates' mainmasts be made 1 1/2 inches more in diameter, the 2nd Rates 2 inches, and the 3rd Rates of 80 guns 2 inches, and the 3rd Rates of 70 guns 1 1/2 inches, their fore and mizzen masts in proportion. [Also gives diameters for the main and fore yards of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Rates].
