In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
Court Martial on board the PLYMOUTH in the Medway. President, Captain John Jennings, Commander of the ships at Plymouth and Commander-in-Chief of the ships in the Rivers Thames and Medway. Captains Fairfax, Hancock, Stewart, Darrison, Loades, Cleavland, Symonds. Enquiry was made concerning the loss of the FALCON, Captain Thomas Bryan in command. The ship was taken by the enemy in the West Indies in May 1694 and there were complaints made against Captain Bryan for embezzling His Majesty's stores. Court found that the FALCON was engaged for a considerable time by several French men-of-war of much greater force and that she could not have been saved. The Court acquitted Captain Bryan. The Court having examined the other complaints about Captain Bryan acquitted him. Enquiry was also made into the Deal Castle, Captain Henry Fowles in command, striking ground upon the Maize on her voyage to Holland. It appeared that Andrew Norwood was in charge of the ship but the Court found that the ship running aground was caused by the shifting of the wind and squally weather. The Court acquitted Andrew Norwood, Pilot. Signed by the Officers of His Majesty's Navy presiding at the Court Martial.
