In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
We certify that the R was placed on Thomas Barnes a Rigger in Portsmouth yard, and was taken off by Commissioner Greenhill pursuant to reference from the Navy Board to him dated 30 September 1698. The wages for Midsummer and Michaelmas quarters 1697, the time the yards are paid to and further than which no quarter books are sent to this office, was received by Robert Godwin assignee. Francis Pearse is borne a Labourer on the quarter books for Portsmouth, but we do not find that at any time he had an R put on him. The two last quarters Midsummer and Michaelmas 1697, was paid to Richard Lockyer assignee. Signed MH.
