In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
My letter of 2 September from Carrickfergus gave an account of the defect in our rudder and our having orders to sail to Carlingford. We arrived there on 14 September and I secured our rudder as much as possible, but I cannot make it sufficient for the ship and there is an absolute necessity for a new one, all of which I represented to His Grace the Duke of Schonberg. I have been ordered to this place with 200 French prisoners and upon arrival here on 20 September, I sent to Liverpool to know if I could be supplied with a rudder there and find that I can. We are also wanting several stores and desire an order for provisions, for we have not above 10 days in the ship. Both officers and seamen have been taken with a violent sickness and my Lieutenant and Master died at Carlingford. I presume to recommend to their Lordships that Robert Brydon is a man qualified for my Lieutenant and ask that a Master be ordered to me. Signed James Wisheart.
