Document signed by Josiah Burchett (c.1666-1746), Secretary to the Admiralty (1694-1742)

I have just received an Account by Express that the LEWIS Hulk has put back to Plymouth with the loss of her Main Mast and Mizzen Mast, and her Commander, Captain Long, opines that the Main Mast was too taut, the Ship being not broad enough to spread the shrouds, and desiring therefore that the new one may be of 24 inches diameter, as she had before converted into a hulk, and of the height of a fifth rate. I am commanded by their Lordships to send you this account, so that by this night's Post you dispatch Orders to the Plymouth Commissioners for fitting her immediately so as to enable her to proceed on her voyage to Jamaica. The EXPERIMENT having by Captain Whetstone's orders seen the Hulk safely to Plymouth, and her Commander, Captain Paul, informing he will apply to girdle her two strakes below and one above the Wale, with 3 inch Fir Deal, being girdled between the Wales already as she is extremely tender, I am commanded to let you know this, so that if you have other Orders, they may be dispatched at the same time.
