Administrative / biographical background
Thomas Henry Lysaght entered the Navy in 1830. He served in the West Indies, Mediterranean, the north coast of Africa and the East Indies, receiving his Lieutenant's commission in 1841. In 1846 he was appointed Lieutenant of the GRAPPLER which captured 13 slavers on the west coast of Africa, liberating over 2,000 slaves. He was rewarded with promtion to the rank of commander in 1849, and was retired as a captain in 1866.
