Letter to Nevil Maskelyne from Mungo Park.

A letter to Nevil Maskelyne dated shortly before Nevil Maskelyne’s reply of 4th October 1794, from Mungo Park, planning to take a pocket sextant on his African travels, and asking Nevil Maskelyne to check a method that might overcome the problem of the sun being too high for the sextant to take a meridonial [sic] altitude. Maskelne’s reply is on the same paper.

Administrative / biographical background
Mungo Park (11 September 1771 – 1806) was a Scottish explorer of West Africa. On 26 September 1794 Mungo Park offered his services to the African Association. Supported by Sir Joseph Banks, Park was selected.
