Administrative / biographical background
Thomas Alexander was born about 1768. He gained the rank of lieutenant in 1790 and served on HMS GLORY (1788) at Lord Howe's action in 1794. He was in command of the sloop HMS HOPE (captured 1795) at the surrender of the Dutch squadron in Saldanha Bay in 1796 and then HMS CARYSFORT (1766) in the East Indies, where he captured the French corvette L'ALERTE. He was later appointed to HMS SCEPTRE (1781), HMS SPHYNX (1775) and then the frigate HMS BRAAVE (captured 1796). While in command of the latter vessel, he intercepted the French warship LA SURPRISE carrying two ambassadors from Tippoo Sultan to Europe. The BRAAVE was part of the squadron under Captain Henry Lidgbird Ball that captured and destroyed a significant number of Dutch vessels in the Batavia Roads in 1800. Due to poor health, Alexander was obliged to resign his command of the BRAAVE and return home in 1802. He was later appointed to HMS RENOWN (1798), HMS COLOSSUS (1803) and then HMS VENGEUR (1810), guardship at Portsmouth. Alexander gained the rank of Admiral of the Blue in 1841 and died at Fareham in Hampshire in 1843. His service record can be found under the reference ADM 196/3/6 at The National Archives.
