Journal kept by John Richard Alexander on HMS SUPERB, 1850-1851.
Notebook containing a journal kept by Alexander between 22 April 1850 and 15 January 1851. It starts with the departure of HMS SUPERB (1842) from Plymouth to take up station in the Mediterranean and includes references to fatal cases of cholera on the same vessel during an epidemic in Malta. Later there is an incomplete record of Alexander’s voyage home from Malta on the iron paddle packet HMS OBERON (1847), commencing on 4 January 1851. Part of the volume has written extracts in Spanish, possibly taken from literature.
