Barlow is unemployed for several months before getting a post as chief mate on board the DELIGHT, a ship hired by the East India Company, bound for China. He gives a detailed list of the cargo.
The sailors' wages are reduced because of the damaged cargo. Barlow hopes to obtain a post as master of a ship, but his friend who might have helped him dies. Eventually he gets a job as chief mate on the DELIGHT, hired by the East India Company and bound for China. Barlow gives a detailed list of the goods put on board, and complains about the Company's rules against trading by the officers.
