Barlow fails to obtain the command of the MADERASS because, despite offering £100 as a gratuity, he is outbid by another man. He then ships as chef mate of the WENTWORTH, bound for China.

Barlow stays at home for a year, refusing several offers of posts as first mate. He offers £100 as a gratuity to obtain the command of the MADERASS, but despite being promised the position is outbid by another man who gives more money. He then ships as chief mate of the WENTWORTH, part-owned by Sir Henry Johnson and bound for China. The ship sails in October 1699, carrying cargo which Barlow itemises.
