In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
Your Lordships, I have just cause to complain of the ill treatment I received from the Lieut. Of HMS ROYAL TRANSPORT. I am the Gunners Mate. The ship was ordered on shore to be cleaned. The Gunner gave me direct charge to take care of the Powder and other stores. The Lieut. came on board and ordered me to take a scraper and scrape the ship. Not making any resistance I told him it was not my business. He then beat me so severely that he rendered me incapable of service. There are several witnesses to this. In 18years service I have never received a blow from Commissioned or Warrant Officers. I request Your Lordships to investigate the situation. Signed William Maunder, Gunner's Mate. [Date unknown].
