Letter from the Shipwrecked Fisherman & Mariners Royal Benevolent Society

The letter, from the Central London Office, was originally accompanied by a copy of the Annual Report and the Silver Life Saving Medal which was to be presented to O'Gorman's mother, Bridget O'Gorman.

Administrative / biographical background
In 1921, The Shipwrecked Fishermen & Mariners' Benevolent Society, founded in 1889, gathered to present their chief life saving awards for 1920. These awards bore the name of the late Mr. Emile Robin who provided the necessary funds with the stipulation that the interest should go to the captain and chief officer of the British vessel which had carried out the most meritorious rescue of the crew of another ship . This was judged in 1921 to be the Oxonian. All the crew of the Oxonian that took part in the rescue of Bradboyne's crew were also awarded the Silver Life Saving Medal, five, including O'Gorman, posthumously.
