Box O70A: Papers of Charles H. Allen: School reports from Brandon House, Cheltenham, 1901-1903. Notebook on navigation and nautical astronomy and various papers relating to Allen's training and examinations as a Royal Naval College cadet at Osborne and Dartmouth, 1903-1909. Typescript account of the attack on the German cruiser MOLTKE by the submarine HMS E 42 commanded by Allen on 25 April 1918, together with diagrammatic sketches of the attack and other related papers. Printed booklet: 'With the Harwich Naval Forces 1914 - 1918 or under Commodore Tyrwhitt in the North Sea' by Commander Claude L.A. Woollard (retired). Typescript sheets and files relating to lectures, training course, technical issues and events involving submarines, 1915-1932, including a lecture by Lieutenant G.D'Oyly-Hughes DSO at the Royal Naval Staff College at Greenwich. Various notebooks and notes, including a lecture on submarines given to WRNS in 1942. Allen as a midshipman on HMS VICTORY at Portsmouth, 19 December 1866 to 9 April 1867, HMS MINOTAUR, 10 April 1867 to 30 June 1870, HMS DUKE OF WELLINGTON, 1 July 1870 to 30 November 1870, HMS CADMUS, 1 December 1870 to 12 November 1871, then on HMS DUKE OF WELLINGTON again, 13 November 1871 to 19 December 1871.
Administrative / biographical background
Allen-Hoblyn was last employed in the coastguard service at Padstow in 1893. He was placed on the retired list with permission to assume the rank of commander in 1896 and was promoted to retired captain in 1902. He lived at The Rhydd, near Hanley Castle, and was buried at St Peter’s church burial ground, Bushley, Worcestershire, in 1924. Allen received training in submarines and appointed for service in them in 1913. He was second in command of the submarine HMS C7 in 1914. He was first lieutenant on HMS E24, the first British minelaying submarine in 1916. Allen was awarded a DSO in recognition of his abilities in command of the submarine E 42, when she successfully torpedoed the German cruiser MOLTKE in 1918. He died in 1962.
