Letter written by Lieutenant Charles G Grylls, to his father, Reverend Henry Grylls.
A letter written by Lieutenant Charles G Grylls, HMS ‘Sans Pareil’, twelve miles of Sevastapol, to his father, Reverend Henry Grylls, Vicar of St. Neot, Cornwall. It concerns his joining the ship SANS PAREIL (70 guns) and account of the Battle of Alma (20 September 1854) which he observed, being ‘close enough to witness nearly the whole of it’. He hopes to write his account of the capture of Sebastopol as a follow up. This incidentally is provided in our archives in a logbook he kept between September and October 1854 as a lieutenant (JOD/96). The logbook includes a detailed account of both the Battle of Alma and the Battle of Sebastapol.
