Grylls’s service record is available online via The National Archives. 31 January 1853- he returns to the SANS PAREIL, becoming lieutenant, after at first, a supernumerary. 6 March 1854- lieutenant HMS CEYLON. 16 March 1855 lieutenant commander of the gunboat FANCY. The Navy List for 1854 confirms Grylls as a lieutenant (commissioned 11 June 1852) serving in the SANS PAREIL during this time. He is later lieutenant commander of the gunboat FANCY, from 16 March 1855 up to 10 May 1856 when the FANCY is a tender to the ROYAL ALBERT (Flagship, 121 guns).
