Administrative / biographical background
Bague entered the Navy in 1798 as a first class volunteer on HMS HAERLEM (captured 1797). He took part in operations in Egypt in 1801, was promoted to lieutenant in March 1805, and was wounded while serving on HMS COLOSSUS (1803) at the Battle of Trafalgar. His later appointments as a lieutenant included command of the boats from HMS BITTERN (1796) and HMS DELIGHT (1806) and he was present at the capture of Genoa in 1814. Bague was on half pay from 1821 onwards, retired in 1851 and promoted to the rank of commander in 1855. He served under Lords Keith, Nelson, Collingwood, Cornwallis, Exmouth and Sir Richard King. Sword WPN1263 in the National Maritime Museum collection is attributed to him.
