Small bundle of certificates of passing, good conduct and service, letters of appointment, etc. from the service of William Henry Webb in the Royal Navy and Coast Guard, 1827-1859. Also some printed articles concerning retirement terms and pay.
(1) Report of progress and certificate of passing at the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth, dated 26 June 1829.
(2) Certificate of good conduct for Webb as college volunteer and then midshipman on the sloop HMS LIGHTNING (1829), between 27 June 1829 and 13 September 1832.
(3) Certificate confirming the dates of Webb’s attendance at the Royal Naval College and then serving afloat, issued by the Admiralty Office, dated 5 November 1832.
(4) Certificate confirming Webb’s qualifications and capabilities in filling the situation of a lieutenant in His Majesty’s Fleet, signed by officers in command of vessels at Port Royal, dated 14 November 1834.
(5) Certificate of passing in mathematics and navigation at the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth, dated 7 June 1836.
(6) Certificate of good conduct for Webb as college midshipman on the sloop HMS LARNE ex LIGHTNING (1829), between 5 October 1832 and 17 June 1836.
(7) Certificate of good conduct for Webb as college mate on the schooner HMS COCKATRICE (1832), between 12 November 1836 and 15 September 1840, with reference to the vessel being caught in a hurricane in the Rio de la Plata.
(8) Letter confirming Webb’s nomination as an inspecting commander in the Coast Guard service, issued by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, dated 28 August 1850.
(9) Certificate authorizing Webb, as an inspecting commander in the Coast Guard, to enforce the regulations of the British and French Fisheries Act, issued by the Commissioners of Her Majesty’s Customs, dated 28 September 1850.
(10) Certificate of good conduct for Webb as an inspecting commander in the Coast Guard between 20 September 1850 and 8 September 1857, issued by the Coast Guard Office, dated 28 January 1859.
(11) Copies of ‘Supplement to The London Gazette’ published on 3 August 1860 and 13 July 1864, concerning retirement terms and pay. Also a printed sheet with amendments to the system of promotion and retirement, issued by the Admiralty on 2 April 1866.

Administrative / biographical background
Webb was born at Ledbury circa 1814 and entered the Royal Naval College at Portsmouth in 1827. He served as a college volunteer and midshipman on the sloop HMS LIGHTNING later LARNE (1829), between 1829 and 1836. He served as mate on the schooner HMS COCKATRICE (1832) between 1836 and 1840. In the period 1850-1857 he served as an inspecting commander in the Coast Guard. He died at Berrow in Worcestershire in 1894. His service record giving his date of birth as 23 April 1813 can be found under the references ADM 196/16/59 and ADM 196/37/1369 at TNA.
