During the Second World War, Mrs Kathleen Blyth was an honorary local secretary to The Missions to Seamen. From her home address in Tonbridge, Kent, she collected gifts and subscriptions for sending comforts to seafarers serving on minesweepers, trawlers, patrol ships, and other vessels of the Merchant Navy (the Minesweepers’ Comforts Fund). The comforts included books, magazines, playing cards and other games, jigsaw puzzles, tobacco, cigarettes, cocoa, biscuits, cakes, toiletries, writing materials and sewing kits.

The collection mostly consists of letters to Mrs Blyth from numerous seafarers, expressing gratitude for parcels she had dispatched to them. Some photographs of trawlers and other vessels, and some newspaper clippings, are included.

Administrative / biographical background
Kathleen (Kitty) Mary Park Woodburne was born at Bedhampton, Hampshire, in 1895. She married Howard Neville Blyth in the Lambeth area of London in 1928. During the Second World War she was an honorary local secretary to The Missions to Seamen. From her home address at Airlie House, London Road, Tonbridge, she collected gifts and subscriptions for sending comforts to seafarers serving on minesweepers, trawlers, patrol ships, and other vessels of the Merchant Navy (the Minesweepers’ Comforts Fund).
