Administrative / biographical background
The P&O archive records show Nicholas Skottowe entered service with P&O in 1847, becoming Chief officer in January 1852.The HIMALAYA was his 3rd command (January 1854); he transferred to the SIMLA in May 1854, before being granted leave of absence in June 1855, finally earning the leave he so often mentioned in his letters. He served with the company until at least 1871 on the Indian and Australian routes.
