Copy of a letter written by Mrs Molly Bernard-Smith to her sister describing the 18 day voyage on SS HIGHLAND CHIEF and all the trouble they suffered.

Transcript of a letter kept in the HIGHLAND CHIEF, 1906, by Mrs Molly Bernard-Smith to her sister Eleanor Bishop describing the 18 day voyage from Cape Town to Buenos Ayres on a ship that was originally for cattle but was made temporary passenger steamer for this voyage. The ship was carrying 260 passengers though was licensed only for 8 saloon passengers and had not been cleaned in 9 months, the letter goes on to describe the fear of mutiny, drunken crew and Eleanor learning to steer the ship as they had lost the 3rd and 4th Mate at Cape Town.
