Administrative / biographical background
Boult was born in South Shields in 1956 and first went to sea as a deck cadet in 1974 with W.A. Souter & Co Ltd of Gosforth, Newcastle. During the cadetship he trained on vessels mostly owned by Sheaf Steam Shipping Co Ltd, including the bulk carrier SHEAF ROYAL (1972). After further experience at sea and studies at South Shields Marine College he qualified as a second mate. He then joined the United States Lines containership AMERICAN COMANCHE (1972) as third officer. During the 1980s and 1990s Boult worked on Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) research ships and completed a diploma in Nautical Science. He volunteered on the Greenpeace campaign vessel BELUGA (1960), and on Ocean Youth Club training ketches. After a series of engagements with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) he qualified as a master in 1995. He then found work closer to home, as an officer with Trinity House; the Northern Lighthouse Board; on survey and dive support vessels; and on ferries operated by the Stena Line, NorthLink and Caledonian MacBrayne. He retired from CalMac Western Isles services in 2012. Boult also established himself as a freelance photojournalist, lecturer and author. Two of his books are in the Caird Library collection: 'Her Home the Antarctic' (RMG ID PBH6631) and 'St Helena: A maritime history' (RMG ID PBH7992). More information on his career can be found on the CD-ROM entitled ‘And so to Sea’, also available at the Caird Library collection (RMG ID PBH9909).
