Letters written by Joanna Ballard (née Scott Moncrieff), wife of John Archibald Ballard. Includes letter to her Uncle and Aunt asking for their blessing on her proposed marriage to Ballard, five letters to her brother-in-law George Alexander Ballard, a letter to her mother on the stormy journey to Australia, a letter to her daughter Susan and a letter to her grandson Jim. Also includes an account of her daughter Jane's illness, death and burial at sea while the family were sailing to India from Australia. Lastly there is a seven page account written by Joanna of her husband's retirement, his tour of Greece and his sudden death near Thermopylae.
