Letters by John Archibald Ballard to members of his family during his marriage, appointment as Mint Master at Bombay and retirement. Most letters are addressed to his brother George but the folder also includes letters to his wife, sister, father-in-law and sister-in-law. The letters mainly contain family news including the births of his children and the death of his daughter Jane. He also describes elements of his work at the Mint in Bombay and life in India as well as periods spent on leave in Britain. The final letters cover his retirement and his journey through Greece shortly before his death. Folder also includes letter from his mother on the birth of his son George and a letter from University of Edinburgh informing him of their decision to confer on him an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws.
