Administrative / biographical background
This particular voyage would not have been a particularly pleasant one for passengers (or crew) – they carried patent fertiliser from Leith to Nossi Be, where they picked up a cargo of guano to Auckland. On the homeward voyage, the vessel was damaged in a storm, and had to put in to Dunedin for repairs to her main topmast, waiting two months before returning home. Passengers on these vessels had to be wealthy, not employed – it was difficult to predict when you would return to England.
