Administrative / biographical background
Dillon was born at St Helier, Jersey, in 1809. He was promoted to master in 1832 and staff commander in 1863. He was master or acting master aboard many ships over his long career, including HMS FORTE, RAINBOW, GEYSER, RALEIGH, ILLUSTRIOUS, VICTORY and HM Surveying Vessel THUNDER. He died at Plympton in Devon in 1895.
