Administrative / biographical background
Henry James Langford Clarke joined the Navy in January 1879 on the training ship BRITANNIA. He subsequently joined HMS NORTHUMBERLAND as a midshipman and served on HMS SWIFTSURE and HMS TRIUMPH in the Pacific. He passed for lieutenant in January 1887, commander in 1898, captain in June 1904 and rear-admiral in July 1915, serving in the Pacific, East Indies and South East America. Placed on the retired list in March 1914, he remained in service throughout the war at Devonport Dockyard. Clarke died in 1944. Service Record available online at The National Archives, ADM/196/42.
