Administrative / biographical background
Bernard De Gomme designed a new fort at Tilbury and was closely involved with its construction during the 1670's. In the ordnance office de Gomme worked closely with Sir Jonas Moore, surveyor general, particularly over the Medway defences. On 27 October 1679, following the death of Moore and his succession by his son, de Gomme was appointed assistant surveyor in addition to his existing duties.
