Copy of Letter Book kept in H.M.S SERPENT 1852-1853by Lieutenant L.U. HAMMET. Includes Hammet's report to the Admiralty of a six month voyage around the Pacific Islands including the Phillipines, the Sabtang Islands, the Bashee Islands, Peel Island, the Marshall Islands, the Pescadores Islands, Macaskill Island, the Patterson Islands and Schanz Island. One of the main aims of the voyage was to find two men, Joseph Oliver Lacey and Captain Samuel James Dowsett, who had dissappeared in the Pacific. Hammet took over command of the ship after Captain William Garnham Luard was taken ill and sent back to England.
