Diary mostly covers events during his service on the armed merchant cruiser HMS MARMORA.

Diary of Wireless Telegraph Operator (1st Class) Percy Hanson, Royal Naval Reserve, 18 September 1914 to 15 February 1918. It mostly covers events during his service on the armed merchant cruiser HMS MARMORA (1903) in the central Atlantic, based at St Vincent in the Cape Verde Islands, then escorting convoys through the German submarine blockade. Hanson wrote the diary in pencil on loose wireless and signal forms. Enclosed are newspaper cuttings relating to the sinking of the BALLARAT (1911) while carrying Australian troops in April 1917, papers explaining the difficulties of wireless telegraphy work off the coast of Africa, and drawings showing the routes of convoys from Dakar and Sierra Leone. There is also a programme for a concert on the MARMORA in November 1916 with P. Hanson listed as a piano player.
