Box 1: Includes a 'Handbook of Signalling, 1913'; Test Mobilisation Diary, 1914; miniature diary, 1915; modern printed map of Halifax Harbour; printed guide to HMS DONEGAL, 1905; rough notebook, n.d.; postcard written when served in the DONEGAL, January 1916, postcard has the caption 'German High Seas Fleet, patrolling the German (?) Ocean' postcard is a painting of the sea. Official papers, 1921-1923 associated with his position as paymaster commander; an essay written by Paymaster Commander J. C. Boardman entitled 'Portsmouth.' An essay written by Paymaster-Lieutenant K. W. James entitled, 'The Falkland Islands' and several other essays written by paymasters; notes on French grammar, 31 October 1922.

Administrative / biographical background
Appointed additional assistant clerk by the Admiralty in 1913 and assigned to the INFLEXIBLE and WARRIOR in the same year; Ward-Smith was appointed clerk by the Admiralty, on 15 August 1915, to serve in the DONEGAL; becoming paymaster commander and later took part in the Battle of Jutland.
