Private journal of Admiral William Henry Maxwell.

Vol 8 - Private journal of Admiral William Henry Maxwell, 6 January 1885 - 19 April 1889. Contemporary account of Maxwell's active naval service, recording his voyage in HMS NEPTUNE, Channel Squadron, on a return passage from Portsmouth to Kingstown via Cadiz, until 6 April 1885. Maxwell was then writing from his home, Holywych House, in Cowden, Kent, 7 April 1885-1886 March 1887. He began a voyage to Hong Kong, to act as Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria as part of the Jubilee celebrations, first in SS MIRZAPORE (P&O, England to Columbo, 14-31 March 1887), and then in SS DECCAN (P&O, Columbo to Hong Kong, 8-19 April 1887). He was on board HMS VICTOR EMANUEL at Hong Kong, 20 April-14 May 1887, and was writing from Hong Kong itself, 14 May 1887 - 22 February 1889. On 6 October 1888, he records a family trip to Japan, taken 28 August - 5 October 1888. Maxwell begins his return voyage to England in SS SHANNON (P&O, Hong Kong to Colombo, 27 February - 11 March 1889), and then in SS KHEDIVE (P&O, Colombo to Marseilles, April 1889). The journal ends with Maxwell writing again from Holywych House, 19 April 1889, after travelling from Marseilles, via Paris, to London by train.
