Letter from Nelson to Lady Hamilton, 1 August 1803.

Nelson to Lady Hamilton, Victory, off Toulon, 1 Aug 1803, (Harrison I, 126; extract in Nicolas, V, 149), on money and Merton, having received her letter under cover to Mr Noble of Naples.

Nelson confirms receipt of Emma’s letter of 31 May. He discusses his finances and arrangements on board the VICTORY, including a picture of Emma and Horatia now hanging in his cabin. He discusses the retired state of the King and news about various other individuals in Naples. He fears that Naples and Sicily will fall into French hands, despite the sound advice he gave to Acton. Nelson mentions promotions given to Elliot, Pettet and Hindmarsh, the last mentioned for his conduct as gunner’s mate of the BELLEROPHON five years ago at the Battle of the Nile. Nelson promises to write to his brother William and sends regards to Emma’s mother and all at Merton.
